Joan Harrison, photographer and author of Images of America GLEN COVE, (Arcadia Publishing 2008), will present “Glen Cove Now and Then,” a sixty minute illustrated talk exploring the special people and places of the City of Glen Cove from the1800s to 2008. From the city proper to the seaside, from the Gold Coast Colonies to the everyday neighborhoods, the presentation will take a photographic look at what was there then and what is there now. The audience is invited to bring their own photographs of old Glen Cove to share with each other. A book signing will follow to benefit The Friends of Glen Cove Library. Joan Harrison is a professor of Art and photography at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Her works have been published and exhibited internationally. Images of America GLEN COVE is her first book. Refreshments provided by the Friends of the Glen Cove Library.

GIAN LORENZO BERNINI AND HIS BAROQUE CREATIONS IN ROME

This lecture covers the life and work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the greatest Baroque artist of 17th Century Rome. Dr. Mario Macaluso, a retired professor who provided instruction in Romance and Classical Languages and taught Liberal Arts courses at various colleges, will focus on Bernini's life and aesthetic philosophy, which inspired all his creations as a Baroque artist in the Eternal City. The lecture will contain a presentation and description of Bernini's major architectural works and sculptures enhanced with slides showing the artist's buildings, churches, squares, fountains, and his magnificent statues in the Galleria Borghese. Music and literary readings will enrich the presentation, providing the audience with a better knowledge and appreciation of the Baroque period as one of the most dynamic art movements in Western culture. WORLD LANGUAGE COLLECTION
The Library maintains a collection of foreign language materials aimed at meeting the recreational and informational needs of our diverse community. While many of these items are on loan to us through Hempstead Library's rotating foreign language collection, the Glen Cove Library is pleased to announce it is increasing the number of foreign language books purchased as part of our permanent collection. Included are novels in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, Polish, Russian, Persian and Korean, as well as non-fiction items in Spanish. If you are interested in obtaining a foreign language book that we do not have, please inquire at the Reference desk and we will try to obtain it for you through Interlibrary loan.
LONG ISLAND TALKING BOOKS LIBRARY
Do you or someone you know have difficulty reading printed material? The Long Island Talking Book Library can help! The Long Island Talking Book Library (LITBL) is a free library service for individuals who cannot hold, handle or see well enough to use regular print books. LITBL is a subregional library of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, the division of the Library of Congress that produces books and magazines in Braille and recorded media for people with visual or physical disabilities. LITBL lends professionally recorded books and magazines, and the special equipment needed to play them, to eligible residents on Long Island. Materials are sent to borrowers and returned by postage-free mail. This program is made possible through the support of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System and the Nassau Library System, in an effort to ensure accessible library services to people with disabilities throughout Long Island. Two sizes of bricks available, and can be inscribed to honor a living person, or to honor the memory of a loved one.
